Several longtime aides and advisers to President Joe Biden have reportedly been considering strategies to convince the president to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
According to several reports, two individuals close to Biden have confirmed that the president still believes he has a stronger chance of winning against former President Donald Trump than Vice President Kamala Harris. All this, despite his lackluster performance in the CNN presidential debate on June 27.
However, a small group of his closest advisers within the administration and the campaign have become increasingly convinced that he must step aside from the presidential race.
“He needs to drop out,” one Biden campaign official told NBC News, offering a blunt assessment of his re-election chances. “He will never recover from this.”
A person close to the Biden campaign disclosed the growing realization within the re-election brain trust that Biden currently has no path to defeat Trump, while a second official added that “no one involved in the effort” believes he can win. And so, these two, who have privately expressed their doubts about his chances for re-election, are now finding ways to persuade the president of several key points. First, they must persuade Biden, who remains confident in his campaign viability, that he is unlikely to win against Trump. Second, they must convince him that another candidate, such as Vice President Kamala Harris, could defeat Trump. Finally, they must ensure Biden that selecting another candidate would be orderly and not lead to chaos within the Democratic Party.
However, one of the biggest challenges these loyal and long-serving allies face is convincing Biden that he cannot win.
A person familiar with the dynamics within this inner circle indicated that such conversations are not taking place among those closest to the president and that Biden is committed to staying in the race. Biden, who spent the past two weeks attempting damage control his disastrous performance, remains convinced that he is the best candidate to defeat Trump.
Andrew Bates, a White House spokesperson, strongly denied these accounts despite a flood of negative media coverage focusing on the president’s age and mental capacity.
“Unequivocally, this is not true. President Biden’s team is strongly behind him,” Bates said, to which T.J. Ducklo, a spokesperson for the Biden campaign, agreed, calling the claims “patently false” and asserting that the team stands firmly with the president.
Top campaign bosses Jen O’Malley Dillon and Julie Chavez Rodriguez even penned a memorandum claiming that Biden still remains the best candidate against Trump because the campaign has found “no indication that anyone else would outperform the president” against his predecessor.
“Hypothetical polling of alternative nominees will always be unreliable, and surveys do not take into account the negative media environment that any Democratic nominee will encounter. The only Democratic candidate for whom this is already baked in is President Biden,” they said.
